ALBION – ODeen Kent Redman, 75, of Albion, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2013, in Mesa, Arizona.
ODeen was born on Dec. 24, 1937, at his home in Albion, Idaho. He was a welcomed Christmas present to his parents, Victor Redman and Mildred Barrett Redman. ODeen was the first grandchild and was surrounded by grandparents, aunts, and uncles who loved to spoil him. He was able to enjoy all the attention until he was joined by his sister, Beverly, and 11 years later his younger brother, Barry, making the family complete.
He grew up and attended school in the Albion Valley through his 8th grade year. His leadership abilities had already begun to shine as he was the speaker at his 8th grade graduation in May of 1952. His speech was titled, “Beyond the Visible Horizon.” ODeen then attended Declo High School where he excelled in all forms of academics and athletics. He held many leadership positions throughout high school and was chosen outstanding member of the speech department and represented the State of Idaho on a two-week tour of the United Nations in New York City. He was the valedictorian of his class in 1956.
He married his high school sweetheart, Darla Anderson, on Sept. 8, 1957, at The Church of Transfiguration in Moose, Wyoming. He and Darla lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, while he finished his college education. ODeen attended the University of Utah majoring in electrical engineering and graduated from the Salt Lake City School of Electronics in 1961. ODeen and Darla were blessed with three children, Vikki, Rich, and Deana. The family enjoyed living in the beautiful Albion Valley and everything that it represented. Many weekends were spent camping and fishing with neighbors and friends, hunting for the perfect buck, or trailing that famous bull elk. These traditions were shared with his children and 15 grandchildren as well as his 16 great-grandchildren who were the true loves of his life.
ODeen was born into the telecommunications business that was started in Albion in 1929, by his grandparents, Mike and Jeanette Breslin. The company consisted of one switchboard, a few miles of army field wire, and 18 customers. His parents were both involved in the small company so, ODeen spent much of his time by his grandmother’s side at the switch board. He was a quick learner and enjoyed helping grandma with all the wires. By the time he was in the 3rd grade he was able to relieve his grandmother for short spans of time.
In 1963, ODeen’s father passed away suddenly. ODeen immediately found himself as the manager of the Albion Telephone Company at the age of 28. Six months later, his grandmother Breslin passed away. The challenges of a growing company were taken in stride with a tremendous amount of dedication. In 1965, his mother suffered a heart attack while attending a telecommunications conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, leaving ODeen not only the responsibilities of the company but also the guardianship of his 14-year-old brother, Barry. This was a time when his leadership skills were put to the test.
ODeen always had a passion for flying and received his pilot’s license in 1967 and was more than willing to take flight anytime he could find someone willing to go. He spent many hours in the past 40-plus years flying friends and family. He flew cowboys to rodeos, employees on business trips, kids for prom dates, and passing off different Boy Scouts on their aviation merit badge. He always felt that if a Scout could survive the “roller coaster” they deserved the badge.
ODeen was always an important part of the community. He was appointed to fill the unexpired term of his father on the Albion City Council in 1963, and was reelected for a 2nd term. In 1970, he was elected mayor of the City of Albion and served in that capacity until 1974. He served as a commissioner of the Albion Highway District for more than 20 years and was the secretary of the district. He served as president of the Rocky Mountain Telephone Association and as a board member of the United States Telephone Associaton. He spent numerous years on the board of the Raft River Electric Coop and had also served as president. He was on the advisory boards of the National Rural Electric Coop Association, the Idaho State University Telecommunications, and the Bureau of Land Management. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and recently received his 50-year pin. ODeen and Darla were honored to receive the citizenship award from the Albion Grange. They were chosen as the Cassia County Fair Grand Marshals in 2009 and considered it an amazing honor. Most recently, he was honored as the 2012 Mini-Cassia’s Businessman of the Year.
As ODeen entered semi-retirement, he learned to enjoy life to its fullest. He and his wife, Darla, have enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren at their property in Salmon (which was closer for their Montana kids). Additionally, he liked spending time with his many great friends – whether flying up the river for a quick lunch or riding his Harley for a scenic tour. He and Darla recently became snow birds, going south for the winter where ODeen enjoyed new adventures in the deserts of Arizona. He always believed that it was important to live life to its fullest and has passed that advice on to many young people.
ODeen saw the growth of the Albion Telephone Company going from a switch board and a handfull of customers, to fiber optics, and more than 3500 customers. He led a small business into a top-end telecommunications industry. He truly witnessed “Beyond the Visible Horizon,” and was an incredible leader in the communication industry as well as the community he shared.
ODeen is survived by his wife of 54 years, Darla Redman of Albion; a brother, Barry (Dianne) Redman of Declo; one sister, Beverly Redman of Raleigh, N.C.; his children, Vikki Naki of Manhattan, Mont., Rich (Connie) Redman of Albion, and Deana Crane of Bozeman, Mont.; his grandchildren include Jessica Chavez, Troy (Breeanna) Naki, Koriann Naki, Shane Naki, Shannon (Jason) DeJong, Cody (Rikelle) Montgomery, Jennifer (Kyle) Bradshaw, Shyane (Jed) Hutchison, Nicole (Billy) Allphin, Kylee (Wylee) Douglas, Kyle Redman, Josh Parke, Danny (Ashley) Crane, Nathan (Luz) Crane, and Derek Crane; and 16 great-grandchildren. ODeen was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents; and a baby sister, Delores.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Albion LDS Church with Bishop Randy Brackenbury officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
