RUPERT – Larry (Gary) Lee Ford, 60, of Rupert, returned to our Heavenly Father on the morning of Independence Day due to a long-term illness.

Larry was born to his parents, Samuel and Gladys (Maggie) Ford on May 13, 1953, in Pocatello, Idaho to the Sage Brush Clan born for the Mini-House Clan.

He married his loving and devoted wife and best friend: Grace on December 7, 1981 in Window Rock, Arizona. Larry was a father to three wonderful children: Zackary Ford, Shaun Ford, and Sharon Benally, all of Idaho.

Best of all he was a loving grandfather to seven grandchildren: Keyonica, Shania, Shatana, Shanzie, Zayien, Nayeli, and Marcel. He has eight siblings: Kenneth Ford, Betty Ford, Evelyn Slim, Juanita Sheak, Katherine Enditto, Jennie Ford; late Henry Ford, and Anita Rocha.

Larry attended grade school in Idaho, Albuquerque Indian School, and graduated from Intermountain High School in Utah in 1974.

He enjoyed riding motorcycles and swimming. He also drummed for the Pow-Wow Club while attending high school. He collected John Wayne movies, loved music by XIT, Moe Bandy, Hank Williams Sr. to name a few.Larry’s siblings remember him most as being the patient over protecting brother. When his siblings were home alone, his sister, Betty recalls Larry putting on a coat and pot holders to cook for his siblings because he was trying to prevent himself from stove burns. He always took initiative to care for his siblings. He was famous for being the peacemaker in the family. He always kept calm during sibling squabbles and patiently taught his siblings’ specials trades like leather work, mechanical and electrical traits. He sarcastically teased his siblings but always encouraged them to work hard and overcome hardships.

Larry worked most of his life for Wade Baker’s Farm in South Burley, Idaho. He is most remembered by his co-workers as “Sitting Bull” or “B-49,” a radio CB-name acquired while working diligently on the farm. While taking his father lunch, Shaun remembers sharing lunch in Larry’s favorite outdoor break room, “Sundown (farm field).” Lunch included his favorite meal, hot fried potatoes smothered with ketchup wrapped in a freshly made tortillas, an ice cold Pepsi and hot chili to top it off.

He also worked for the City of Rupert and several other companies in Southern Idaho.

He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints. In his last days, he can be remembered walking a block to the nearest LDS church; he called this his “prayer walk.”His grandchildren chuckle as they remember his unique and profound sneezes. They swear by his best home-made kool-aide, popcorn, and fried potatoes. The granddaughters never let Grandpa Larry down as they sided with him during silly quarrels with grandma. Grandsons were not let down when they needed Grandpa Larry to bail them out of minor hitches. He saved a collection of toys for his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife: Grace Ford of Idaho; his children: Sharon (Michael) Benally, Shaun (Michelle) Ford, and Zackary (Nancy) Ford, all of Idaho; his grandchildren: Keyonica, Shania, Shantana, Shanzie, Zayien, Nayeli, and Marcel, all of Idaho, his mother: Maggie Ford of New Mexico, his siblings: Kenneth (Dorothy) Ford, Betty Ford, Evelyn Slim, Juanita Sheak, Katherine Enditto, all of New Mexico; Jennie Ford,  and Anita Rocha of Idaho. On October 20, 1948, she married Philbert Dwain Lind in the Logan Utah LDS Temple.  He was her best friend and cared for her during her years of illness.  Thank you Dad for your kind attention and care for Mom.  You have been a wonderful husband and companion to her.

Six months after their marriage they moved to Lynn, Utah where Dwain ranched.  They were blessed with 4 children, one daughter and three sons while they lived there.  In 1960 they moved to Tremonton, Utah, so that the children could attend school.  Dwain continued to ranch and got a job working at Thiokol.  The family moved to Burley in 1966 to get the kids back out on the farm.  Dwain purchased a farm in View, where they still reside.  Margene worked at JC Penneys and also cooked lunch for the Declo schools.

She married Jay Stubbs June 21, 1996 in the Logan LDS Temple. They made their home in Hazelton, Idaho running the family dairy. Their lives were blessed with three children, Cole, BaiLee, and JayCee. Stephanie had a long list of accomplishments but her greatest accomplishment was being a mother to her children.

Stephanie was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held many callings including Young Women’s president, Sunday School teacher, and ward activities leader. She loved those she served.

July 11, 1942 – Aug. 29, 2013
RUPERT  –  Carter Benson Smith, 71, of Rupert, passed away from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident south of Jackpot, Nev., on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, where he was traveling on one of his many adventures with his best buddy, Rod.
Carter  was born on July 11, 1942, to Vernal and Myrtle “Babe” Smith in Tacoma, Washington.  His family later moved to Boise, Idaho, where he attended Borah High School and met the love of his life, Linda Lee Norris.  Carter and Linda married in Boise  on June 10, 1961.  They were blessed with three children, Kurt Smith, Paula Goodsell, and Arlin Smith.
Carter served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1965.  He was a member of the American Legion, a leader in the Boy Scouts of America, the Lions Club, Elks, and the Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue.  He worked for the State of Idaho Highway Department, Redi-to-Pour Concrete and, Morrison-Knudsen helping to build the Hells Canyon Dam in Hells Canyon, Idaho.  In 1973, Carter moved his family to Rupert, Idaho, to help his dad and step-mom operate Smitty’s A&W Drive-In, which he later took it over and renamed  “Smitty’s.”  Smitty’s became an essential part of the Rupert community for some 40 years.
After retiring from being an owner/operator of Smitty’s, Carter decided that retirement was way too boring so he took on the task of becoming a school bus driver for the Minidoka County School District where he was set for retirement on Sept. 1, 2013.
Carter enjoyed the finer things in life  –  hunting, fishing, backpacking, motorcycle riding (in his younger years), hunting for rocks, sightseeing in the south hills with his very dear friend, Rod Butterworth, jeep riding with his family on the desert, having his morning coffee with his coffee buddies, and playing pinochle  or any other card game with his family.  Most of all, Carter enjoyed having his family together and being able to watch the loves of his life, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren laugh and play.  There was never a dull moment or a time Carter did not smile when his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were around.   One of Carter’s most wonderful recent memories was Christmas 2009 when the “entire” family invaded “Papa” Carter’s space.
Carter was preceded in death by his father; mother; stepmother; and grandparents.  He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda Smith; his three children, Kurt Smith (Cori Hedges Smith), Paula Goodsell (Dan Bywater) and Arlin Smith (Tani); eight grandchildren, Keith (Kayla), Emily (Ben), Nickol (Sean), Grace (Logan), Kayleigh (Kyle), Kyle, Ryleigh and Landrie; and eight great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly.  He was also loved and he loved numerous dear friends, relatives, and his employees of Smitty’s – the “Girls.”
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley.  Military rites will be provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Organization.  Burial will be in Cloverdale Memorial Park in Boise.
